Mobile Devices
The Chequamegon School District has made it a goal to adopt mobile computing devices from this time forward and will no longer be purchasing fixed non-mobile devices or labs. In order to accomplish this the district installed a new wireless network system the summer of 2010 at the Park Falls campus and extended the network to the Glidden campus in the summer of 2011. You can read about the wireless system here and the technology goals for mobile computing here.

School Issued Laptops
The school district makes every effort to provide a laptop for all staff members to use. This is the preferred type of device for the faculty and staff to use at this time. The current laptops are Dell Latitude D620 units with Windows XP loaded on them or Dell Inspiron 1749's with Windows 7 loaded. Some staff members have a Dell 1564 with Windows 7. Some teachers have a MacBook. All Windows-based operating system units have Deep Freeze installed to prevent malware from modifying the operating system.
All teachers have been instructed in setting up a Dropbox.com account in order to store their files in the Cloud and not on the laptop. You can read about our cloud-based storage goals here.
It is important for you to understand, you cannot save anything to your laptop while it is in a frozen state and expect it to still be there after a reboot. Your system is protected from any modifications while it is frozen, this includes saving files, making any sort of system changes, installing software, or even changing the desktop background.
In order to make changes to your laptop you must first thaw the computer. Many school districts lock up their systems and do not give all users the ability to unlock them. You are allowed to unlock your computers and make changes as long as you understand the rules. Very simply, if your computer requires repair because it was in an unlocked state our repair action will be simple - we will re-image your computer and all changes to it will be erased. If you saved files on the computer and did not save them in your online Dropbox then you will loose those files.
To thaw your Windows-based computer in order to install software or make changes see the instructions here.

iPods, iPads and iPhones
The school district has purchased many iPads for student use in the form of iPad labs that can be easily taken to the classrooms where they are used for teaching and learning. Many teachers make daily use of the iPad labs. It is the intention of the district to continue to purchase iPads in sufficient quantities so that each grade level has its own iPad lab to be shared with as few as 3 classrooms each.
The district thus far has purchased 2 iPod labs to be able to equip each student in a classroom with an iPod for a particular use designated by the teacher. For instance, the Middle School iPod lab is frequently checked out so students can do graphing calculator exercises. Other uses include recording a quick movie or taking pictures during a class activity.
The district also recognizes the iPhone as a smart device besides being a phone and is equally capable as any of the other devices the school has purchased for doing research and being used in the classroom along with the iPods and iPads. The district does not purchase iPhones but many students own one and do in fact bring them to school. The district is working towards a policy to allow these devices to be used along side their iPod and iPad brethren.
