The Mission of the Chequamegon School District 1:1 Program

Education in the 21st Century will finally experience the change sought for decades due in part to the availability of low-cost computing devices. These devices, for the first time ever will allow classrooms to be transformed by providing digital learning devices to all students at the same time and at the moment and source of instruction.  This new 1:1 environment will enable students to learn to live, work, and function responsibly in a digital society, by engaging students with interactive and instructional content, promote the ability to become self-directed and focused lifelong learners.  Students will transform from consumers of information taking a passive role in their learning, to becoming explorers, undertaking an active role of their learning in the classroom.  While the students transform from passive to active learners, the teachers also undergo a transformation as they develop from the source of all knowledge and information in the classroom to one of coach or facilitator of the learning process.

Therefore, the Mission of the Chequamegon School District’s 1:1 program is to facilitate these changes in teaching and learning and to create this collaborative learning environment for all of its students.

Changing Education:

There are pressures on schools to adopt an all digital content by 2017.  The District feels this is the future of education and is adopting the 1:1 policy based on many of these educational reforms.  Also, all students will be tested starting in 2014 with online performance tests.  The 1:1 program will facilitate our transition towards an all digital content solution and online testing.

From a recent article in District Administrator magazine:
Districts are trading print for digital textbooks, with 22 states making significant digital content policy changes in recent years—altering the definition of a textbook and encouraging flexible funding, says Geoff Fletcher, deputy executive director of the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA). SETDA recommends districts complete the shift from print to digital within the next five years, and several have successfully started the transition.

1:1 Equipment

The District goal is to achieve 1:1 across all grades from kindergarten to 12th grades.  Students in grades K-1 will have iPads issued one per child and students in grades 2 through 12 will have a Chromebook issued and assigned to them.
